Virtual Museums - An Overview
Opening the museum through mobile technology
Through the project ARKcast visitors at the Danish art gallery “ARKEN – Museum for Moderne Kunst” may borrow an iPod, a mobile video and audio player, with video and audio guides to selected works of the exhibitions, including interviews with artists or museum curators. Additional ARKcast episodes are continually being produced in connection with new exhibitions at the gallery.
Example: ARKcast – podcasting from a gallery and its visitors
Besides borrowing the iPod at the gallery, the ARKcast episodes are also available through the gallery website, where they can be heard and seen online, or they can be downloaded either manually or through podcast to the visitor’s computer or own mobile device. The ARKcast website is in Danish.
Visitors’ own podcast productions
In an ARKcast workshop students and visitors may create their own interpretation of the art at the gallery. The aim is to acquire an understanding of the art through active participation in planning and producing a podcast. Podcasts produced by visitors or students are made available in a special section of the gallery website, thereby making their voices possible to be heard by other visitors.
