Virtual Museums - An Overview

On the web a growing number of museum portals are appearing. These offer gateways to several museums and exhibitions with a common theme, and most have an explicit educational scope directed both at teachers, students and other kinds of visitors.
Example: The Virtual Museum of Canada
This portal is both in English and French and it functions as a gateway to all sorts of homepages from Canadian museums and other institutions etc. working with Canadian cultural heritage. Furthermore it includes an image gallery, direct links to a number of fun and games, a teacher center with references and lesson plans, and a tool called ‘my personal museum’ where users can create their own collection of images from the image gallery. The gateway is the result of a partnership between Canada’s museum community and the Department of Canadian Heritage.
